Types of Courses
The NCC understands that each individual has different needs. We offer a diverse range of delivery methods and educational levels.
To help you make an informed choice, we have provided a glossary of course terms below. All courses are accredited by the college or an awarding body.
Short Courses, often known as 'Awards'
- Delivered in the workplace
- Usually 12-16 weeks long
- Involve initial induction and an end multiple choice test
- The learner progresses through a workbook of knowledge and activities with remote tutor support throughout.
Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQ)
These course relate to the learners' work.
They are a blend of academic/professional qualifications which test knowledge and understanding, and NVQs which determine competence to work in a particular sector. VRQs develop skills that can enhance the individual’s ability, but are not specific to particular tasks.
- Delivered in the workplace
- Usually 16-24 weeks long
- Involve initial induction and an end exam/assignment/portfolio of evidence as
specified by the relevant awarding body.
- The learner progresses through a workbook of knowledge and activities with remote tutor support throughout.
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ)
These qualifications assess competence in a work situation. They are based on National Occupational Standards,
which are statements of the skills, knowledge and understanding needed in
employment. and clearly define the outcomes of competent performance. Achieved through assessment and practical training, recognising a person’s competence in their job role.
There are five levels of NVQs , ranging from Level 1, which focuses on basic work activities, to level 5 for senior management.
Their academic equivalents are:
NVQ 1 = Foundation GNVQ / three or four GCSEs at grade D-E
NVQ 2 = Four to five GCSEs at grades A-C
NVQ 3 = Two A Levels
NVQ 4 = Degree
NVQ 5 = Postgraduate Qualification
Seminars
- Delivered as a group workshop
- Usually a 1-day course
- Focused on one main subject – eg Equality & Diversity
- Usually does not attract funding
- Can achieve College/Awarding body certification
E-Learning
- Flexible short courses
- Choice of qualifications and non-qualifications
- This delivery methodology is for those who wish to learn utilising a computer, rather than a traditional workbook.
